Techlift goes to the Big Apple!

The Cogeneration power plants were being constructed in Long Island City and Astoria, in the Borough of Queens and at 15th Street, East Village in Manhattan.

This was Techlift’s first project in the USA and it through up some interesting challenges, not least reverting back to feet, inches and pounds..!

The Challenge

Each power plant brought its own logistical challenges with the most significant one being the lack of storage and laydown space, which is not surprising in a metropolis such as New York City..!

To solve the problem a designated storage facility for the power plants was created at the former Military Ocean Terminal in Bayonne, New Jersey. Techlift provided personnel to manage the logistics of the facility, planning and coordinating the loading of components onto trucks, barges and floating cranes.

Con Edison’s East River Generating Station in downtown Manhattan threw up some interesting challenges for our rigging engineers. Not least the installation of two combustion turbines and two steam generators inside the existing 1950’s building. A combination of hydraulic gantry systems, skid systems and cranes along with a highly skilled team of riggers, operators and engineers successfully completed the tasks.
